When clients ask me about America, I start with one distinction that saves a lot of time. The United States has permanent statuses, the green card, and temporary visas that let you live and work but expire. Only a green card leads to citizenship. Below I compare all the realistic routes using USCIS, the Department of State Visa Bulletin and the BRIDGES United States page. Everything was checked on 4 November 2026.

The main routes at a glance

Investment: EB-5 and E-2

EB-5 is the only investment route that gives a green card to the investor, the spouse and unmarried children under 21. The amounts were set by the 2022 Reform and Integrity Act, and the USCIS EB-5 page confirms them. In the November 2026 Visa Bulletin EB-5 is current for every country except China and India. Details are in my EB-5 guide.

E-2 is cheaper and faster but temporary. It requires the citizenship of a country that has a treaty with the US, and Russia, Belarus, India and mainland China do not. See the E-2 guide.

Talent and work

If you have a strong record in science, business, art or sport, the O-1 visa and the EB-1A green card need no investment and no job offer for EB-1A. EB-2 with a national interest waiver (NIW) is open to people with an advanced degree whose work matters for the country. I compare them in the talent guide. The H-1B lottery, the L-1 transfer and employer sponsorship are in the work guide.

Family

Spouses, unmarried children under 21 and parents of adult US citizens are immediate relatives and have no annual quota. Other relatives wait in preference queues that can last years. The family and citizenship guide explains both.

What changed in 2026

  • From 1 January 2026 a presidential proclamation restricts visas for nationals of dozens of countries, fully or partially. Check your own passport before you plan anything.
  • The pause on immigrant visas for 75 countries announced in January 2026 is no longer in effect after a court decision in August 2026, but consulates still apply extra checks.
  • On 14 October 2026 DHS proposed to stop giving deference to earlier approvals when E, L, O and H-1B status is extended. It is a proposal with comments open until 13 November 2026, not a final rule.
  • New USCIS fees for EB-5 petitions apply to filings from 30 November 2026.
  • The “Gold Card” launched in December 2025 is a $1,000,000 gift to the US Treasury, not an investment, and the number of approvals so far is very small. I would not build a plan on it yet.

Taxes

A green card holder is a US tax resident and is taxed on worldwide income, according to the IRS. Citizens are taxed on worldwide income wherever they live. This is the first thing I ask clients to discuss with a tax adviser.

Citizenship and the passport

After 5 years as a permanent resident, or 3 years if married to a US citizen, you can apply for naturalisation with form N-400. According to the BRIDGES Passport Index of 4 October 2026, the US passport ranks 11th of 199 with 179 destinations without a prior visa.

My honest view

If your goal is a US passport, look at routes that end in a green card: EB-5, EB-1A, EB-2 NIW, an employer or family. E-2 and O-1 are good for moving quickly, but they are a bridge, not a destination. For a family without a treaty passport, the L-1A transfer through your own company is often the most direct start.

Questions and answers

Can I buy a US green card?

Not directly. The closest option is EB-5: an investment of $800,000 in a project in a targeted employment area, or $1,050,000 elsewhere, that creates at least 10 full-time jobs. It gives a conditional green card for 2 years and then a permanent one.

What is the fastest way to live in the US?

For an investor from a treaty country, the E-2 visa, which BRIDGES usually gets in 2-4 months. For a person with a strong professional record, the O-1 visa. Both are temporary statuses and do not lead to a green card by themselves.

Can Russians get an E-2 visa?

Not on a Russian passport: Russia has no treaty of commerce with the United States. Some investors first acquire a second citizenship of a treaty country, but since the 2022 AMIGOS Act a person who got that citizenship through investment must have lived in that country for at least 3 years.

When can I become a US citizen?

Usually after 5 years as a permanent resident, or after 3 years if you are married to and living with a US citizen, provided you meet the physical presence, English and civics requirements.
