Spain Digital Nomad Visa in 2026: €2,849 a Month, the 20% Rule, a 3-Year Permit and the Beckham Law

The Spanish digital nomad visa, officially the visa for international telework, appeared with the Startup Law at the start of 2023. It suits people who already work remotely and want to live in Spain legally. I use the requirements of the Embassy of Spain in Budapest, Barcelona International Welcome and the BRIDGES programme page.
Who qualifies
- you work remotely for a company outside Spain, as an employee or freelancer;
- the relationship with the company has lasted at least three months, and the company has been active for at least one year;
- you have a university degree or at least three years of professional experience;
- you have no criminal record for the past five years and have health insurance without co-payments.
Freelancers may also work for Spanish clients, but that part cannot exceed 20% of their total activity.
Income in 2026
The threshold is 200% of the Spanish minimum wage. Royal Decree 126/2026 set the 2026 minimum wage at €1,221 a month in 14 payments, which is €17,094 a year.
| Household | Share of the minimum wage | About per month |
|---|---|---|
| Main applicant | 200% | €2,849 |
| First family member | plus 75% | plus €1,068 |
| Each further member | plus 25% | plus €356 |
Some consulates calculate on 14 monthly payments and quote a lower monthly figure for the same yearly total. Plan with a margin.
Visa or permit from inside Spain
You can apply at a Spanish consulate abroad for a visa of up to one year, or, if you are in Spain legally, apply directly for the residence permit online. According to the Ministry of Inclusion, the permit is granted for the period requested, up to three years. Renewals are for two years.
Family
A spouse or partner, children and dependent parents can join you. Each additional family member raises the income threshold.

Taxes
If you live in Spain more than 183 days a year, you usually become a Spanish tax resident. The good news is that remote work under this visa counts as a qualifying move for the Beckham law: 24% on employment income up to €600,000. I explain the conditions in the tax guide.
My honest view
For an employee of a foreign company or a freelancer with stable clients, this is the best route to Spain today: it allows work, includes the family and leads to long-term residence and citizenship. The weak point is documents: the employer letter, proof of the company’s activity and Social Security coverage must be prepared carefully.
Questions and answers
How much do I need to earn for the Spanish digital nomad visa?
200% of the Spanish minimum wage. With the 2026 minimum wage of €1,221 a month in 14 payments, that is about €2,849 a month over 12 months. Add 75% of the minimum wage for the first family member and 25% for each additional one.
Can I work for Spanish clients?
Employees must work for companies outside Spain. Freelancers may work for Spanish clients as long as that work does not exceed 20% of their total professional activity.
How long is the permit valid?
A visa issued by a consulate is valid for up to one year. A residence permit requested in Spain is granted for up to three years and can be renewed for two-year periods.
Can I combine the nomad visa with the Beckham law?
Yes, if you meet its conditions. Spanish law expressly counts remote work under the international telework visa as a qualifying move for the special regime for impatriates.
