France Talent Card for Employees in 2026: Qualified Employee, Innovative Company, EU Blue Card and the French Tech Visa. Salaries, Durations and Family

If a French company wants to hire you, the Talent card is usually the best tool. It replaces the classic work permit, lasts up to 4 years and includes the family. Here are the employee grounds as set out on Service Public, checked on 5 November 2026.
The grounds side by side
| Ground | Key condition | Gross salary a year |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified employee | master’s obtained in France, contract over 3 months | from €39,582 |
| Innovative company employee | job in R&D or the development of an innovative company | from €39,582 |
| Employee on assignment | intra-group transfer, 3 months in the group | from €39,582 |
| EU Blue Card | 3 years of higher education or 5 years of experience, contract of 6 months or more | from €59,373 |
On every ground the employer does not need a work authorisation and is exempt from the foreigner employment tax.
Qualified employee
This ground is often misunderstood. It requires a master’s degree obtained in France, or a level 1 diploma labelled by the Conference of Grandes Ecoles, and a contract of more than 3 months with at least €39,582 gross a year. The card follows the contract, up to 4 years. It is the natural next step for international graduates of French universities.
The EU Blue Card
The Blue Card is open to foreign degrees: you need a diploma for at least 3 years of higher education, or 5 years of comparable experience (3 years in the professions set by decree), a contract of at least 6 months and a salary of 1.5 times the average, €59,373 gross. With a contract of 2 years or more the card follows the contract up to 4 years; with a shorter contract it lasts the contract plus 3 months, up to 2 years. After 1 year with a Blue Card in another EU country you can move to France and apply within a month.
Start ups and the French Tech Visa
The French Tech Visa is not a separate permit but a simplified procedure leading to the 4 year Talent card. For employees the company has to be recognised as innovative by the Ministry of Economy, and the job must be linked to its R&D or development project, according to La French Tech. The salary floor is the same €39,582.

Intra-group assignments and UK companies
Employees sent by a foreign group need 3 months of seniority and €39,582. Note that years on this ground do not count towards the long-term resident card, according to Service Public. From 30 October 2026 decree No. 2026-1001 also lets employees of UK companies post to France for up to 12 months without a work authorisation in fields still to be listed by order, as explained in the BRIDGES news.
Procedure, fees and family
You file the visa at the consulate; for a stay of 1 year or more you receive a 3 month visa and apply for the card online. The card costs €350 and a renewal €250 since 1 May 2026, according to Service Public. The spouse and minor children receive the Talent family card, and the spouse may work.
My view
Check the salary against the threshold on the date of filing and again before renewal, because the thresholds rise with the minimum wage. A foreign graduate with a strong offer should usually go for the Blue Card rather than the qualified employee ground.
Questions and answers
What salary do I need for a French Talent card?
As of 2026, at least €39,582 gross a year for the qualified employee, innovative company and intra-group grounds, and €59,373 for the EU Blue Card. The thresholds follow the SMIC and the average salary, so they are checked on the date of filing.
Does my employer need a work permit for me?
No. On the Talent employee grounds and the Blue Card the employer does not apply for a work authorisation and does not pay the foreigner employment tax.
Can I use a foreign master's degree?
Not for the qualified employee ground: it requires a master's obtained in France or a level 1 diploma labelled by the Conference of Grandes Ecoles. With a foreign degree, look at the Blue Card or the innovative company ground.
Does the Blue Card help with permanent residence?
Yes. Holders can apply for the EU long-term resident card after 2 years in France if they have 5 years of lawful residence in the EU in total.
